Science

Week of August 29-September 2, 2011

This week the students will be looking at how science correlates with other topics and scenarios. The students will need to come up with a situation in which they use the Scientific Method (Observation, Hypothesis, Experiment, Conclusion) to confirm their outcome. They will also need to find a scientific theory that either failed or was proven wrong. We are still working on the background of science and the theories of science before we dive into certain topics and parts of science.

Week of August 22-26, 2011

This week the students will begin looking at both science related careers and how technology has improved science related careers. They will have the special opportunity on Tuesday to hear from Dr. Richard Gray, a cancer surgeon at Mayo Clinic of Scottsdale. Dr. Gray will introduce the students to technology that he is able to use to help fight cancer. He will also let students know how technology has allowed him to treat more people for cancer.

In addition to hearing from Dr. Gray, the students will be required to turn in a fact sheet about two different careers involved in science, what they do, and what pieces of technology they use in their career. This fact sheet will be due on Wednesday.

The students will also begin a long-term project that will be due September 7th. This project involves writing a research paper on a major scientific development within the past decade and then recreating that development. The students will be allowed to use their imagination on how they would recreate a model of that development.
